Abstract: A controlled subjective test was carried out to assess selected qualities of three microphone techniques for capturing the ambient sound of a concert hall surround sound. The effects of signal delay between the front and rear channels and microphone distance were explored. The tests indicate that the perceived results are programme-dependent, but that a compromise can be found using delayed close microphones, giving similar quality for the range of programme items used.
